Kanetix study suggests Canadians need a “crash” course on driving

Toronto, Canada (OPENPRESS) July 31, 2007 -- Today, kanetix (http://www.kanetix.ca), Canada's insurance marketplace, released results of a recent study titled, A crash course for drivers in Canada. The study, based on 2006s auto insurance shoppers at http://www.kanetix.ca, looks to see if some areas of the country are more accident prone than others. The study looked at data for the collective group of drivers from the provinces where kanetix.ca currently offers online auto insurance quotes. These provinces include: Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. Gregory Ellis, Co-founder of kanetix.ca, provides some highlights that came from the study: Of the total car insurance quotes completed online in 2006, we found that almost 20 per cent included at least one accident during the last 10 years.

ASIA MARKETS: Most Asian Markets End Higher, Surviving Volatility

Most Asian stocks survived intraday volatility to advance Friday, with Chinese issues ending at a record high, but Japanese shares were a mixed bag as gains in exporters such as Sony Corp. were matched by losses for banking majors such as Mizuho Financial Group.

An overnight rally on Wall Street and bargain hunting in stocks, following a sell-off Wednesday on concerns risks related to global credit markets were spreading to Asia, led the gains after most markets faced a roller-coaster ride during the session.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 indexslipped a modest 0.03% to end at 16,979.86, unable to stay about the psychologically important 17,000-point level, after it hit an intraday high of 17,102.07 during the session.

The broader Topix indexrose 0.2% to 1,672.54.

In the mail, outrage and warnings

We're reserving this week's column for notes of outrage and caution from readers, like this one from Carlo Tolve of New Hyde Park. The target of his outrage - and a complaint to the New York State Insurance Department - is Allstate Insurance, and I suspect he is not alone.

Tolve, 72, a retired aerospace worker, received a notice from Allstate last month, addressed to "Dear Customer," in which he was notified that his homeowner's policy would not be renewed because, the notice claimed, his house is close to the Atlantic coast and in danger of hurricane damage.

Tolve wrote, "I am located in the center of Long Island. I am miles from the Atlantic coast. I have lived here over 40 years and have never seen any catastrophic conditions in my area. But what has really upset me is that they [Allstate] state that if they had my auto insurance policy, they would renew my house policy."
